Hard Drive Portable

Going with a hard drive portable style gives you excellent external backup and increased hard disk capacity via USB ports.

Buying a hard drive portable style is a good idea for a wide variety of reasons.  Portable hard drives are useful for easily transferring data to multiple computers.  But a portable hard drive is also invaluable for safely backing up important data on your current computer.  No computer is completely safe from the possibility of a hard drive crash, so it’s important to plan ahead for that scenario.  The only way to prevent the loss of your vital information, is to ensure that you have a portable backup hard drive.

The main use of any external hard drive, is to back up data in case of an emergency or computer failure.  For this purpose, your best choice is probably going to be a hard drive portable product that allows you to plug right in via USB cables.  These are extremely large portable hard drives capable of backing up and restoring an entire computer.  These external hard disks are usually operated using USB ports which allow for the fast transfer of files, and also extreme ease of use.  Typically hard drives portable are as simple to use as plugging in a USB cord from the external hard drive, into your current computer, and then copying all essential files.

If you’re more concerned about the ability to easily transfer files from place to place, a USB portable hard drive is probably your best option.  These are also known as USB flash drives, but function the same way that an external drive would.  They are extremely portable hard drives and can double as keychains, bracelets, or can be easily carried in a coat pocket.  The only negative side is that flash drives cannot store as much data.  An external hard drive can supply multiple terabytes of space.  But a USB hard drive portable model has a limitation of 64 gigabytes at the most.  This is great for fast transfer of files and media for multiple computers, but unrealistic for backing up a computer.

Another thing to consider if you’ll be backing up important information, is purchasing a portable external hard drive that features data encryption.  This is an important feature so that you can ensure your information is completely protected.  The problem with any hard drive portable products is that they can be easily lost or stolen.  If your drive isn’t password encrypted, anyone with possession of the device can easily access the data contained therein.  Password encryption is usually more expensive, but if you’re carrying sensitive data, it is completely worth the extra expense.  Otherwise you run the risk of your sensitive materials falling into the wrong hands because someone broke right into your external USB hard disk.

When you’re looking to purchase any type of external hard drive you’ll want to go to a computer electronics store.  Specialists like Best Buy and Radioshack have a wide variety of backup hard disks.  Typically a large external hard drive will cost in the area of $80 all the way up to $400 for terabyte models.  Usually USB flash drives are much less expensive, and can be found for as little as $10 or as much as $100.  The hard drive portable price is usually affected by how much data they can store, as well as whether or not the unit features password encryption.
